When the zombies come, I’ll be hiding on my roof
All week I’m going to be talking about writers I admire, and their new, awesome projects. (Yesterday: Julie Klam.)
Today I want to talk about Colson Whitehead. His new book, Zone One, is so freaking good. It’s about zombies and New York City and feeling isolated. It’s about living your life in your head. It’s about what happens when it feels like the world might be coming to an end, and trying to figure out if you feel devastated or relieved. And it is all beautifully written.
I feel like this book should win awards. The ending is phenomenal. Do you know how hard it is to write endings, you guys? How many books have you read where you feel annoyed because you made it all the way through to a sucky ending, and it makes you feel like the writer didn’t know how to end it? A lot of them, right? I interviewed him for Metro and he told me that he actually wrote the last line of the book on the first day he started writing it, and it shows. So everything he does before the ending leads right up to that moment, and it feels very complete. It is a deeply satisfying reading experience.
You can buy it right now at your local independent bookstore. So highly recommended.
