I’m 39 today. Shaddup.
If you’re anything like me (and you probably are), you’re the kind of person who likes to be the FIRST to say happy birthday to a friend. Like, call-them-at-12:01 AM-and-screech-into-their-voicemail-kind-of-first. Because it shows how much you love them, obviously, and has nothing to do with any sort of competitive instinct whatsoever and/or a compulsive fear of forgetting an important date and having your friend hate you forever. (At least that’s how it works for me.)
So this year I noticed that there are truly so many ways to be first. I got a text from Bex right before midnight, but Aimee Lee emailed me a few hours before that. Michelle from River Run Bookstore gchatted me even before that (AND she tweeted first, as well, making her a multiple-platform winner), and Bernie IM’ed me at 12:15 AM. Guy Anglade left a message on my facebook wall around 1 AM. My grandmother’s birthday card arrived on Saturday. The first phone call I got was from my father this morning. And Vannesa was a champ and met me for yoga at 9 AM, so she covered it in person. You are all first, and you are all awesome! Thank you all and many more. But I just have one question:
WHERE IS MY GODDAMN BIRTHDAY VOICEMAIL MESSAGE?
I was in yoga from 9-10:30 AM and my phone was off the entire time. That’s ample time, people. I thought you cared.
Jussssssst kidding. Have a great day! And thanks everyone. You all knock my socks off in a big way.
