I took a day trip to Florence, lovely, charming, gorgeous Florence. I am pleased to report that there is a Mapplethorpe exhibit at the Galleria dell’Accademie, which is also the home of Michelangelo’s David. There are actually four of Mapplethorpe’s photos – all of the same black man – at the base of the statue itself. This is supremely satisfying. The only thing that would make it more satisfying is if one of the pictures were that self-portrait of Mapplethorpe with the whip sticking out of his ass. But I don’t even think the Italians are quite ready to go that far yet, at least not when it comes to one of their national treasures. Still: nice job, Italy. America, we still suck.
Just kidding. I LOVE AMERICA. But I don’t miss it. Back at home I have a lot of work waiting for me so why would I want to rush back to that? And I have to finish revising this book. (I am nowhere near finishing revising this book.)
But! There is the next installment of Largehearted Lit @ The Knit with Marie Mockett and Emma Straub and Very Special Musical guests on December 6, and that is very exciting indeed. And Thanksgiving with the cutest niece in the world. Plus a little book release, coming up sooner than I thought – two months!
America, I guess I’ll keep you.
