I forgot to mention that on Saturday I dropped by the very crowded opening party for the Greenlight Bookstore, the new store in Fort Greene.
Kate came with me and we made one loop through the store. (The store is set up so there is a long, gorgeous bank of bookshelves in the middle you can walk around, so we literally walked in a loop.) This is what happened: we saw Summer, who had just seen where “Where the Wild Things Are,” and told us it wasn’t that great; Kate got recognized by a bookstore employee who told her she loved The Great Man, which she had just read, and then she took our picture; we saw lit critics/journalists Ed Champion and Sarah Weinman; we ran into Rebecca, one of the owners of the store, who had a cute new haircut and told us that kids love running around the store in one big circle; we saw Sherry, who is a friend of Word Bookstore; we saw Jessica, who is the other owner and we said congratulations. All in about two minutes. And then we went and drank wine.
Listen, this is a beautiful new bookstore. Both of the owners are young and energetic and smart and known for their taste. How bold and impressive that they took this risk, to open up a store in these times. And yet, as soon as you walk in the door, you realize how very necessary it is that it exists.
I can’t wait to see what unfolds at the Greenlight.
