I went to go meet up with Daniel yesterday at his studio on King Street to drop off a bunch of the books. He'd been working all weekend on a show so it reeked of intense toxic fumes and I was quite high for the time that I was there. He told me he's going to sell the books at his upcoming shows in Cleveland, Rotterdam, the Affordable Art show, and of course, my favorite, the Outsider Art Fair, which is where he and I originally met two years ago. I'm excited that the little book is going to make it all over the place and also it made me feel like I needed to travel again.
We got to storytelling, as we usually do, and I told him about this older man I used to know who was obsessed with the Polish girls who work in this donut shop in his Greenpoint neighborhood. He was always taking them bathing suit shopping, and one day he asked me if I needed any bathing suits and it freaked me out.
Daniel countered with a story from his wilder youth. (He used to party at Studio 54 and I think has been addicted to everything available in the 12-Step series). A photographer friend of his and he would just be hanging out and then one would say to the other, "Hey, we should get some girls over here." So he would call up a modeling agency and say, "We're doing a shoot with (name of famous person photographer regularly worked with), can we see some of your models?" And then girls would dutifully traipse over to an apartment to find two guys drinking margaritas, having a laugh. It was not in a pervy way, he assured me. It was just a joke to them.
They got busted eventually by a model who knew Daniel from around town. He told me she physically assaulted him for a few minutes and the modeling agency would never deal with his friend again. He laughed really hard as he told the story, and it made me laugh with him. Who likes models anyway?
