Long Stretches of Road

The view from E's window

On Sunday I went with a few friends to visit E in Philadelphia. In December she had a tumor removed from her brain, and now she's in rehab, learning how to do things like walk and feed herself. She said she's dizzy all the time, and she hates it. She has to wear a patch over one eye and it sounds like she has to take a lot of medication. Her head is shaved. I told her she looked punk rock and she rolled her eyes at me and said, "Great." I filed her nails for her, though I forgot to bring the nail polish and I was annoyed with myself.

She misses her bed at home the most, she told us. "200 count sheets," she said.

I told her I'd throw her a big party when she comes back to New York, and I will, because she will get better. She is tough, and she is going to make it.

And with that I declare the crap-ass month of January over. One break-up, one death, and one brain surgery, I think that's enough don't you? Bring on the good news, please.
